Seiring dengan berjalannya waktu, bangkai hewan ataupun manusia pasti akan hancur juga. Ia akan 'menyatu' dengan tanah tempatnya berada. Tapi, rupanya tidak dengan bangkai bayi kuda yang satu ini.
Siapa yang menyangka bahwa dengan rentang usia yang sudah sangat lama, yakni 40.000 tahun, bangkai bayi kuda tersebut masih utuh sempurna. Penemuan yang didapatkan oleh sekelompok ilmuwan di Siberia tersebut otomatis menjadi sejarah tersendiri, di mana pertama kalinya para ahli menemukan fosil bayi kuda dari zaman Paleotikum.
Awalnya, penemuan tersebut sebetulnya diketahui dari penduduk setempat. Mereka melaporkan bahwa terdapat kuda di permafrost (lapisan tanah yang berada di titik beku pada suhu 0 derajat C) kawah Batagaika, Siberia.
Mendapati laporan tersebut, ilmuwan dari Jepang dan Rusia pun segera melakukan penggalian di lokasi. Selanjutnya, mereka membawa bayi kuda purba tersebut ke Museum Mammoth, North-Eaastern Federal University, Yakutsk untuk diteliti lebih lanjut.
"Ini merupakan kali pertama penemuan bangkai kuda prasejarah berusia muda yang masih utuh sempurna di dunia," ujar Semyon Grigoryev, kepala laboratorium museum kepada Vintag.es yang brilio.net kutip, Sabtu (22/9).
Dari penelitian lebih lanjut, para ilmuwan pun mengungkapkan bahwa bayi kuda tersebut tewas pada usia sekitar 2-3 bulan. Bahunya memiliki panjang 98 cm, kulitnya berwarna coklat gelap, dan masih memiliki surai, ekor, serta kuku yang masih utuh.
Lebih jauh, percaya atau tidak, organ dalamnya pun masih baik bentuknya. Hal tersebut disebabkan oleh keberadaan permafrost yang tak ubahnya sebagai 'pengawet'.
Mereka pun meyakini bahwa bayi kuda tersebut secara genetis berbeda dengan kuda-kuda yang sekarang tinggal di wilayah Yakutia. Menurut mereka, kuda tersebut merupakan jenis Equus lenensis atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan kuda Lena, yang dulunya menjelajahi wilayah Siberia hingga akhir zaman Pleistosen.
Lepas dari itu, karena tidak terlihat adanya bekas luka di tubuh, untuk mengungkap penyebab kematiannya, para peneliti pun mengambil sampel rambut, cairan biologis, serta sampel tanah dari tempat kuda tersebut ditemukan.
"Kami menduga bahwa bayi kuda tersebut mungkin tenggelam setelah masuk ke sebuah perangkap 'alami'," jelas Grigory Savvinov, peneliti dari North-Eastern Federal University.
Lebih lanjut, otopsi pada bayi kuda tersebut juga dilakukan untuk mengetahui lebih dalam tentang kuda purba selama hidupnya. Misalnya, menganalisis apa saja yang dimakannya dari pembedahan yang dilakukan pada perut kuda.
